Homeschool Helps
Members receive our library of homeschool helps and tutorials. Take the stress out of learning! Whether you're a new homeschooler or a 20-year veteran, our step-by-step guides and tips will show you how to make learning more effective, engaging, enjoyable, and easier.

WHAT KEPT ME UP AT NIGHT. What is homeschooling supposed to look like? Am I doing enough? I can't give up "fill-in-the-blank" curriculum ... what if they miss something important?
Regardless of the subject, topic, or type of activity, narration is my primary teaching tool. If we do not have time to do anything else, we at least do oral narrations.
Instead of filling in the blanks of a worksheet to test what your child has learned (or not learned), give him the opportunity to show and tell what he has learned and what interested him the most.
There are some potential problems you may run into as you start down this road of notebooking. These tips can help you avoid them.
These resources will give you even deeper insight.
Here is a list of supplies as well as some organizational ideas to help you get started.
What is Copywork? Copywork is copying a piece of well-written work, from any variety of sources, onto paper or into a notebook.
I do not start formal notebooking until my children are proficient with 3 skills. By "formal notebooking" I mean creating notebooks for specific subjects/studies that include written narrations, reports, summaries, etc.
You can create your own sketchbook, planner, journal, or other type of notebook. You can also snip the spines to make smaller size notebooks like my kids' quiet time journals pictured below.
It is less stressful for most kids to talk about a topic than to write about it. When beginning notebooking, I ask the kids for immediate oral narrations rather than a written summary or report.
Notebooking topical studies like history, science, Bible, & even literature are easy to do. I get asked many times, "How do you notebook language arts?".
I struggled with homeschool overwhelm for six years before I found our cure. The answer was not a new method, a better curriculum, or a more organized schedule. I'd love to share our story.
We all have days (maybe weeks, months, even years), where we are plain worn out, discouraged, or frustrated with homeschooling. Homeschooling just isn’t working out like we thought it would (or should).
I'm sure you have asked yourself this question at least a few times, "Why am I homeschooling?" There are different ways we would each answer this question depending on the immediate circumstances...
I was no longer trapped by a method, a curriculum, or an ideal schedule. It was at this turning point that I took the advice of another homeschool mom.
Does writing have this effect on any of your children? As soon as you tell them to open their notebook, it begins.Their eyes bounce around like the ball
Please do not wait until you think you have everything figured out and you think you have all the right supplies to start implementing notebooking. Make the time and dig in with your kids!

Hi! I just had to tell you how much I am LOVING the page generator!!!!!!! I do not know why I didn't do this sooner?! I made an entire custom notebook page set for my son's Story of the World to go with each chapter. I love it, thank you!!!!!!!!!!! ...it really has been a life saver. Instead of searching for the right notebook page I can create my own! It is so easy and it literally only took minutes.

...His papers are much more articulate than what he is able to produce manually.
I'm so thankful I found your notebooking site. I'm homeschooling my 11 year-old grandson, who has ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. We've begun using the web app for writing, helping him more clearly get his thoughts on paper without too much frustration. Before this, I've scribed for him when necessary. We've just finished a book report, and a state study on Rhode Island utilizing your tools. His papers are much more articulate than what he is able to produce manually. I've no doubt that he will continue to progress as we become more accustomed to the process. Again, thank you for sharing all these resources. They truly are an answer to prayer.
It has been a life saver!
I am so glad to have found your site, especially Publisher. My son has great difficulties with writing. It was a constant battle every day. Now, he can type responses directly on the notebook page I created with the Publisher. Also, he has begun creating his own pages using pictures and text related to given assignment. I personally enjoy the freedom of creating pages from scratch or from pre-designed templates. The Publisher App is simple and easy to use. It has been a life saver!

learn more about our notebooking pages...
The diversity of our collection makes notebooking easy to implement with ALL children K-12.
Each notebooking set includes a wide variety of layouts, frames, and lines.
Most sets have 3-10 layout choices per individual topic or theme.
Most sets come with both regular and dotted-line formats to accommodate your child’s penmanship needs.
Our notebooking pages have a child-friendly, but elegant look. They will work for the very young & teens.
I have 10 children with a myriad of biological backgrounds, traits, learning strengths and weaknesses. I can say, from my personal experience, our pages work for a WIDE variety of children.
You are welcome to print any and all pages as often as you like for your family or classroom.
Our pages are NOT designed with cutesy, trendy, or distracting graphics and layouts.
Your children will NOT outgrow our selection of notebooking pages.
Our pages are NOT worksheets being sold under the guise of notebooking pages (a new and growing trend).
Our pages do NOT require any specific books or curricula in order to use them.
Our open-ended notebooking pages promote child-led organization, creativity, and deeper levels of thinking.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS . . .
Notebooking can be a lifesaver for the child that hates or is reluctant to write. Let him choose a topic he loves and send him off to the library to search for books on this topic.
- For one of my sons, it was DINOSAURS.
- For one of my daughters, it was FROGS.
- For an older child, it may be a hobby, a favorite literature series, a particular topic in science or event in history.
Often times, just skimming through our topical notebooking pages collections provides a good place to start.

After spending time in his books, ask him to (narrate) tell you about what he learned. If this is truly his passion, then he will likely have lots to tell you!
Ask him to write about:
- What he found most fascinating.
- The new things he learned that he didn't know before.
If he needs some help framing out these ideas, GREAT!
Little by little, build from one sentence to two, from two sentences to a paragraph, from one paragraph to several, etc.

One day at a time, one page at a time, he builds this first notebook. He creates a cover page. He begins adding other interesting tidbits: maybe a list of interesting facts and figures, a poem or song about his topic, a quote from a famous person, maps, a timeline. He can add anything related to his topic.
His notebook takes shape, he takes pride in his work, and soon enough...
a more confident writer is born!
You are not limited to a curriculum plan or scope & sequence.
Your child’s interests can provide the content.
Notebooking provides a natural and unintimidating way to develop
research, organization, and writing skills.
Notebooking is AWESOME for high school students!
This process of reading, narrating, and notebooking builds deeper levels of thinking in your child. We don't want to hang this up at the high school level. This is where years of preparation begin to pay off.
I understand the pressure to dot your i’s and cross your t’s with high school children. Some book and curriculum choices may be out of your control. So what if that is you? Or what if you want to use textbooks or curriculum that's not as interestingly written?

Here’s our experience. Without notebooking, my high school kids actually did very well with textbooks and the typical chapter reviews and tests. However, a week or two after finishing the chapter, they would mysteriously forget most of what they "learned". Sound familiar?
This was the proof I needed to keep notebooking through high school. We use notebooking with the textbooks!
They notebook the chapters and skip any worksheets and busywork type assignments. At the end of the chapter, they take the test for our high school records. There is a HUGE improvement in their retention, PLUS they now have an awesome reference notebook.
Notebooking is not limited to writing summaries or narratives. In the younger years, most of the writing is in narrative form. However, in the middle years and especially in high school, we include more essays, research reports, literature analyses, persuasive writing pieces, etc.

Notebooking with Apologia's Biology course.

Not everything they add to their notebook has to be a formal writing assignment either. Use the notebook as a way to organize notes, collect research, build a portfolio, journal, sketch, brainstorm, mind map, etc.
Notebooking in high school provides a great way to document learning and make learning count.
Don't compromise a meaningful education
for a well filled out transcript!
Our end game is not a high school diploma.
Our goal is to develop mature, independent life-long learners.
Yes, you can certainly make your own notebooking pages. However, we have spent thousands of hours since 2006 creating this HUGE collection of topical pages. I know how much work it is. I know how much time is lost to stop in the middle of a lesson to design page(s) on the fly to fit each of your children. Those few minutes easily turn into 10-15 minutes or half an hour … for each lesson/topic.
Our collection has 1000s of topics READY-TO-GO. Type the topic in the search feature and instantly you are redirected to those pages. And if we don't have a specific topic ... you can easily generate a custom topic in less than a minute with our members-only (included) Page Generator program.
Is your current plan working for you?
Are you spending time where it doesn’t count?
Do you feel like your day is spent investing or wasting time?
Notebooking replaces your time spent on busywork. The quality of time spent is an investment.
An added bonus . . . you will likely finish the day earlier too.
I totally get it because I have been there. This is why we've created both our Free Resource Hub and our Rewards Program. You can test the waters with our free resources and/or individual products to see the benefit for yourself before investing in our membership.
With that in mind, notebooking is not a fad. It’s not a curriculum. It’s a tool. Notebooking can be used with any curriculum (or without). Your choice! You'll likely spend less on curriculum and your membership will pay for itself.

I was the worn-out, stressed and busy homeschooler.

Homeschooling wasn't working out like I envisioned. I felt like a slave to the curriculum. Each day I pushed myself and the kids through the lessons, but ended up feeling like a failure whether we finished or not.
After 6 years of suffering schooling this way, I found new tools that helped me shift my mindset, cut the busywork from our day, and take the reigns of our homeschool, with confidence. Learning became more engaging, more effective, more enjoyable and easier.
At Productive Homeschooling, I come alongside you, not as an expert, but as an experienced friend and homeschooler of 20 years, to share what I've learned and the tools I've created to help you become a more confident, relaxed and productive homeschooler.
