Our Homeschool Story

I struggled with homeschool overwhelm for six years before I found our cure. The answer was not a new method, a better curriculum, or a more organized schedule. I'd love to share our story.

Notebooking Pages

Keep busywork out of your homeschool with 1000s of ready-to-go notebooking pages and apps.  All the notebooking pages you could ever need plus tools for making custom pages!

Notebooking has become an integral part of our schooling this year; we use them with our Sonlight history (to capture narration and related artwork), for our copywork/handwriting, and for science.

We first came across notebooking via an online homeschool newsletter that led us to YOU! We used a variety of your free pages to try out this new idea. In past years, we have primarily used oral narration to reinforce learning, but I wanted to capture some of that on paper this year, for record keeping. Enter your site. I took you up on your offer of the lifetime membership. When I opened up the file, I couldn't believe how many great options there were, always something available to tie in with what we are learning, and new great pages coming along throughout the year. Notebooking has become an integral part of our schooling this year; we use them with our Sonlight history (to capture narration and related artwork), for our copywork/handwriting, and for science. The kids are always excited to see what page is coming next, and we look forward to binding the pages at the end of the year into books! My kids have normally been rather averse to having to WRITE, much preferring the oral narration, but the wonderful pages, and the knowledge they are creating a book, make it more fun for them. And I feel more confident in my homeschooling than ever, because I have wonderful records of all we have accomplished- wonderful peace of mind! I have never been to any other notebooking-pages site, because I have always found everything and exactly what I needed HERE! Thanks for such a fabulous resource!

Homeschool mom ... does any of this sound familiar?

Our curriculum isn't working.

How to homeschool multiple children and NOT lose my mind?

I want to give my children a more personalized education.

I need an easier way to keep track of what we are learning.

We're not getting enough done.

There are so many homeschooling option... curricula, philosophies, methods.  How do I choose the right one(s) for my family?

My children aren't motivated...
and neither am I.

My child hates writing.

How do I make learning more enjoyable without having to prod them along all the time?

How do I help my older kids be more independent?

I need to simplify our day.

There has to a better way than all of these dreaded worksheets.

We need more variety.  We are all SO bored and can't wait for the "school day" to be over.

Nothing seems to stick!

I would love to add more fun to our day, but how and WHEN?

I need to get organized!

I'm tired of wasting money on resources we never use.

I want my children to LEARN, not just pass a test and forget it.

proDUCTIVE vs. BUSY ... HOMESCHOOLER
WHO ARE YOU? who do you want to be?

I was the worn-out, stressed and busy homeschooler.

Homeschooling wasn't working out like I envisioned. I felt like a slave to the curriculum I purchased (not just one, but many).  Each day I pushed myself and the kids through the lessons, but ended up feeling like a failure whether we finished the lessons or not.

If we didn't finish the lessons, that equaled failure.  If we DID finish our lessons, it came at the cost of spending a WHOLE DAY being busy with school, not finishing until the late afternoon or early evening. This meant no time for spontaneous play or fun or learning.  Instead, it meant pure exhaustion for everyone.  So, yes, that was failure too.

After about 6 years of suffering schooling this way, I stumbled across some new tools for learning. Let me be clear.  This was not about adopting a new homeschool method or a new homeschool curriculum or even a new homeschool schedule.  I did all of those things MANY times over in those first six years.

I was introduced to 3 tools that helped me:

  • shift my mindset, from that day until now.
  • cut the busywork from our day, ruthlessly.
  • take the reigns of our homeschool, with confidence.

In a very short time, things turned completely around for us.

Learning became more engaging, more effective, more enjoyable and easier.

Instead of feeling like a failing, stressed and busy homeschooler,
I became a confident, relaxed and productive homeschooler.
Or as I like to refer to myself and those who join us on this journey:

... a ProSchooler

Productive Homeschooling
founder & creator

My name is Debra Reed.  I began homeschooling in the year 2000 and will continue, Lord-willing, until 2028 (with my own kids anyway).  I am the mom of 10 children.  What I share with you on this site comes from a place of wide and varied experience in the aspects of homeschooling, parenting, and marriage within a blended family. I am not by any means a perfect homeschooler, nor a perfect mom, wife, or friend, but I promise to be a real one and share the truth of my experiences.

After 13 years of running my previous site homeschool site NotebookingPages.com,  it was time for a small shift and so here we are at Productive Homeschooling.  I've brought along most of my notebooking pages collections and will continue to share the tools we use and create.  However, I will also share more of my developing story as a homeschool (and for some seasons, public school) mom, a remarried mom and veteran's wife, an adoptive-biological-step mom, and a woman, who only by the grace of God, can share encouragement with you for your own wide and varied homeschool journey.

I am not an expert, but instead an experienced friend, a pro at knowing my own kids and what has and has not worked for our journey (thus far).  I will come alongside you with our story and the tools and apps I use and have created to become a confident, relaxed and productive ProSchooler.  I pray it's a blessing to you.

She is retaining more information than ever, and is even working above grade level.

This is our go to site for all our notebooking needs. My daughter especially loves the Publisher. This site motivates her to want to create and learn. She is retaining more information than ever, and is even working above grade level. We discovered Notebooking within months of beginning our homeschool journey, I couldn’t imagine educating any other way. My daughter wouldn’t want to learn in any other way.

Though my daughter has always been a good student, she wasn’t an independent thinker when it came to learning, unlike her older siblings. She just read what she was told, answered questions at the end of a chapter, and took a test. Then we began homeschooling in 6th grade, now approaching the end of 7th grade, my daughter actually makes out her own schedule of what she wants to read and Notebook on, she has taken initiative in her own education. She now has an interest in History, Classical Music, Art, Literature, and chooses topics most kids wouldn’t.

Like you, I had preconceived notions of the “perfect” homeschool education. I spent a great deal of money our first year on material she never even used. Then when I discovered notebooking, we invested in paper, art supplies, a comb binder, laminator and a library card. She is a happier student, I am a happier mom.

I think Notebooking should be an educational law. I apologize for my lengthy reply, but I have become not only passionate about Notebooking, but a huge advocate. Your site is easy to navigate, and offers a wide variety of subjects and topics. Though we follow a Charlotte Mason style curriculum, Notebooking truly will work with any style or methods of teaching.
